Story by artist ,Darren Yeo:

The message I wanted to express in this piece is to raise awareness of the countless women involved in the provision and carrying of water to their communities and families. I think that in an age where we have access to more technology and solutions than at any other time in history, we can make a difference to these communities and women. In my work, I have used traditional watercolour combined with opaque gouache for some highlights. This piece depicts women of various ages, including girls as young as 5, who walk many kilometres to fill large jerry cans with water. There are two small boys to the right of the village eagerly awaiting the return of their mother.

Artiest

My name is Darren Yeo, I’m a 33-year-old watercolour artist and sculptor from Melbourne, Australia. I’m the founder of one of the largest online Watercolour learning communities @watercolourmentor

My watercolour work features predominantly natural landscapes, urban streetscapes and portraiture in watercolour medium.

Since I was young, I loved creating, drawing and painting. Prior to discovering watercolours, I worked predominantly with clays as a sculpturist – creating hand-made figures, vases and pottery. I exhibited in Galleries in Western Australia, winning a Highly Commended (presented by the City of Melville) for one of my works. Being able to express myself and the beauty of nature through my artwork is something that has made me happy, maintained my mental health, and helped me through challenging times.
